The artist has given the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which works to protect the UK's grassroots music venues.

The star was presented with the prize on 16 October as his new release the album was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Recently, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous local spots across Britain.

The money assisted locations that were facing possible closure due to challenges arising from floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained funding support in improving facilities and technical equipment that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from performances in major spaces helps the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his award funds to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp won the trophy in the mid-90s for their record their work, lead singer Cocker declared that the act would contribute their prize money to the organization War Child.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her award between multiple good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I contributed a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," the artist explained to the media.

Two years ago, the band donated their funds to the local youth club that developed their band, alongside other local music groups.

Additionally 1994 winners M People gave their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," said singer Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had saved a couple of local spots in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in Bristol were acquired under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
